Satsuma name is derived from the region and area called Satsuma-han, controlled by the ruling dynasty of Shimazu clan in the time period of 1600 AD or prior. In the initial period Satsuma potteries were made primarily from the dark and plain clay, whereas as the decorations and artistic methods changed, they began introducing the complex arts such as paintings, drawings to tell stories, especially on Satsuma pottery exported to the European markets. This piece of Satsuma depicts Geisha girls or newly married princess on the river boat, on the backdrop of idyllic Japanese village of ancient Japan. With it's vintage condition, this jar shows the antique quality of Satsuma pottery/porcelain item suitable for preservation for the posterity. Ideal for museum and private collection for public display.
